Buying a Boat in Cocoa Beach or Cape Canaveral?

A pre-purchase boat survey gives a buyer an independent record of observable vessel condition before acceptance. Great River & Lakes – Marine Surveying Co. welcomes survey inquiries for boats and yachts in Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral, Merritt Island, and the surrounding Space Coast. Our Cocoa Beach office is planned to open in November 2026; contact us to confirm availability and the inspection arrangements for your purchase.

Tell us where the boat is physically located, not only the city shown in its listing. A vessel at a Port Canaveral marina, a private dock on the Banana River, or a Merritt Island storage yard can require different access, haul-out, and operating-trial arrangements. Send your acceptance deadline with the vessel details so the inspection and report can be planned around it.

What Does a Buyer's Boat Inspection Cover?

The agreed survey may include accessible hull structure, decks, bulkheads, machinery installations, steering, propulsion, electrical equipment, fuel and plumbing systems, bilge arrangements, navigation electronics, and safety equipment. The report identifies significant observations, recommendations, and areas that could not be inspected or operated.

A clean interior or recent bottom paint cannot establish the condition of concealed structure and systems. Share the listing, prior surveys, service records, known repairs, and any concerns you want investigated. The survey remains limited to its agreed scope and available access; it is not a warranty against hidden defects.

Coordinate the Dockside Visit, Haul-Out & Sea Trial

These are different parts of the inspection plan. A dockside visit provides access to onboard spaces and equipment. A haul-out exposes underwater components. A sea trial provides operating observations. Confirm which parts are included and who will arrange the yard, move the boat, and operate it during the trial.

Harbortown Marina in Merritt Island lists haul-and-launch services, offering one local planning option for a suitable vessel. Confirm current lift suitability, outside-contractor rules, timing, and charges directly with the yard. Provide length, beam, draft, weight, and lifting instructions. Facility mentions are planning references, not claims of affiliation.

For boats around Port Canaveral and the lagoon waterways, plan transit time and a safe operating route with the vessel operator. Weather, water depth, vessel readiness, and access can limit a trial. Record any tests that cannot be completed rather than treating a short dockside demonstration as equivalent to an underway assessment.

Underwater Hull and Running Gear

Depending on construction and configuration, an out-of-water inspection may include the hull bottom, keel, rudder, shafts, struts, propellers, outdrives, saildrives, through-hull fittings, and anodes. Ask about visible impact repairs, corrosion, coating condition, and indications that require additional evaluation.

If the boat is already on blocks or a trailer, describe how it is supported and which areas are obscured. A stored boat may allow useful hull access while leaving engines, generators, plumbing, or other systems untested. Confirm whether launching is part of the purchase inspection.

Engine Inspection and Additional Tests

A marine survey and a specialist engine inspection are different assignments. General machinery observations during a survey do not replace manufacturer-specific diagnostics or internal mechanical testing. For a boat with multiple engines, limited service records, or a known concern, discuss an appropriate specialist evaluation before scheduling.

Oil analysis, thermal imaging, moisture measurements, and borescope inspection may be useful supplements when appropriate and available. Confirm test selection, costs, and limitations in advance. Results should be considered together with maintenance history, operating observations, and vessel condition.

Sailboats, Catamarans, Center Consoles & Yachts

For a sailboat, identify the rig type and whether an aloft or specialized rig inspection is needed. Accessible chainplates, mast supports, steering, auxiliary machinery, and rigging deserve an agreed scope. Hidden attachments and inaccessible fittings may require further work.

For a catamaran, both hulls, the bridge-deck area, cross structures, and duplicated machinery and systems affect access and inspection time. Check beam and lift compatibility before reserving a haul-out.

For center consoles and larger powerboats, provide the number and type of engines, generators, and major systems. A yacht with extensive electrical, cooling, navigation, or stabilization equipment needs a different inspection plan from a smaller trailer boat.

Survey Report, Valuation & Follow-Up

The report can include vessel identification, specifications, photographs, findings, recommendations, inspection limitations, and valuation information when included in the scope. An opinion of fair market value considers the actual boat and relevant market information; an asking price alone is not a valuation.

Allow time to read the findings, obtain specialist opinions or repair estimates, and discuss your next steps before the purchase deadline. If an insurer or lender will receive the report, provide its requirements before the inspection. Each recipient decides whether the scope and surveyor credentials meet its needs.

How Much Does a Cocoa Beach Pre-Purchase Survey Cost?

Fees depend on vessel size, age, construction, equipment, location, and the inspection package. Ask for a quote that identifies survey charges separately from haul-out, launch, vessel handling, travel, laboratory work, and specialist testing where applicable. Confirm the report schedule along with the inspection date.
