Boat Insurance & Condition-and-Valuation Surveys in Cocoa Beach

If an insurance company has requested a current marine survey for your boat in Cocoa Beach, begin with the carrier's written requirements. Great River & Lakes – Marine Surveying Co. welcomes inquiries for insurance and condition-and-valuation surveys around Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral, Merritt Island, and the nearby Indian River and Banana River boating communities.

Our Cocoa Beach office is planned to open in November 2026. Contact us to confirm availability, travel arrangements, and the appropriate inspection scope for your vessel and deadline. An inspection date and report timing must be agreed before you rely on them for a policy renewal or marina requirement.

When an Owner May Need an Insurance Survey

A carrier may request a survey when starting or renewing coverage, changing insurers, evaluating an older vessel, or reviewing a boat after repairs or equipment upgrades. A marina or lender may have its own documentation requirements. These requests are not interchangeable: send the actual checklist or form so we can discuss what the inspection must address.

A condition-and-valuation report records accessible vessel condition, principal equipment, significant findings, and an opinion of value when included in the assignment. The receiving insurer decides whether the surveyor's credentials, report format, inspection date, and scope meet its underwriting requirements. A survey does not guarantee that a policy will be issued.

What Can Be Included in the Inspection?

Depending on the boat and access, inspection may address the hull and deck, machinery installations, steering, electrical systems, batteries, fuel and plumbing systems, bilge arrangements, navigation equipment, and safety equipment. Findings and limitations should make clear which areas were inspected and which could not be accessed or tested.

  • Provide the year, make, model, length, hull material, and engine configuration.

  • Share the carrier's requirements, renewal deadline, and requested valuation basis.

  • Identify the exact marina, private dock, dry stack, trailer, or boatyard location.

  • Disclose recent repairs, modifications, prior damage, or equipment that cannot be operated.

Dockside Survey or Haul-Out?

Ask the insurer whether it requires an out-of-water inspection. Some assignments can be completed afloat within an agreed scope; others need access to the hull bottom and underwater fittings. An afloat survey cannot provide the same direct view of a keel, rudder, propeller, shaft, outdrive, saildrive, or submerged through-hull.

For the Cocoa Beach area, vessel location matters. A boat on the Banana River, at a Port Canaveral marina, or stored in Merritt Island may need a different access and movement plan. Harbortown Marina in Merritt Island advertises haul-and-launch services. Confirm its current lift suitability, contractor access, scheduling, and fees directly with the facility before reserving. We do not imply an affiliation with the marina.

Give the yard the vessel's dimensions, weight, draft, and lifting instructions. Confirm who will operate the boat, whether washing is needed, and how much time is available for inspection. Haul-out, launch, storage, and vessel handling may be separate from the survey fee.

Sailboat and Catamaran Insurance Requirements

Owners of sailing vessels should ask whether the insurer wants a separate rig inspection, an aloft assessment, or documentation of standing-rigging replacement. A general survey of accessible rigging does not establish the condition of every hidden fitting. Share any carrier-specific requirements before the appointment.

For catamarans, provide beam as well as length and describe the propulsion arrangement. Access to both hulls, machinery spaces, and cross-structure areas affects the survey plan. If a haul-out is required, confirm the facility can accommodate the vessel rather than assuming a monohull reservation will suffice.

Valuation After Refits or Upgrades

Engine replacements, generators, electronics, new rigging, and structural repairs may change the boat's configuration and influence its market position. Supply invoices, equipment specifications, service records, and repair documentation when available. Money spent on upgrades does not necessarily add the same amount to fair market value.

Tell us whether the request is for an insurance condition-and-valuation survey or a separate appraisal for another purpose. Financing, ownership transfers, estates, and other uses may require a different assignment and report. Agree on the intended use before work begins.

Insurance Survey or Pre-Purchase Survey?

If you already own the boat and need renewal documentation, an insurance survey may be appropriate. If you are deciding whether to buy a vessel, a pre-purchase survey is generally the more suitable starting point because the inspection is planned around your purchase decision. A sea trial, haul-out, and specialist machinery testing may need to be arranged separately or included in the selected package.

Preparing for the Appointment

Arrange safe access, keys, permission to operate equipment, and an owner or representative who can answer questions. Remove stored items that obstruct inspection areas where it is safe to do so. Tell us about locked compartments, disconnected systems, storage restrictions, or equipment that should not be operated. Never energize unsafe equipment merely to demonstrate it.

If the carrier supplies a form, photograph list, or checklist, send it in advance. After receiving the report, discuss required corrections with the insurer and appropriate repair professionals. The carrier determines what evidence it needs before accepting repairs or continuing coverage.

Cost, Report Timing & Survey Age

Cost depends on the vessel's size, age, construction, equipment, location, and requested scope. Ask for a quote that distinguishes the survey from yard services, specialist testing, travel, or laboratory charges. Confirm report timing against your renewal deadline.

There is no single survey expiration period that applies to every insurer. Ask the receiving company how recent the survey must be and whether it requires particular credentials or additional testing. Avoid scheduling an inspection solely on assumptions about another carrier's rules.
