Limited Rigging & Sail Survey
Sailboat Rigging & Sail Condition Evaluation
Great River & Lakes Marine Surveying Co. provides rigging and sail surveys to assess the condition of standing rigging, running rigging, spars, and sails at the time of inspection. These surveys are commonly requested during pre-purchase evaluations, insurance renewals, and condition assessments for sailing vessels.
What Is a Rigging & Sail Survey?
A rigging and sail survey is a focused inspection of a sailboat’s rigging systems and sail inventory to document observed condition, wear indicators, and installation characteristics. Inspections are visual and non-destructive and do not involve disassembly unless specifically arranged in advance.
Scope of Inspection
Rigging and sail surveys are limited to accessible components at the time of inspection.
Standing Rigging
-
Deck-level rigging components up to approximately 10 feet above deck
-
Shrouds, stays, turnbuckles, and terminals within reach
-
Chainplates and attachment points where visible or accessible
-
Spreaders, tangs, and upper rigging only when the mast is unstepped or otherwise made accessible
What Compression Testing May Identify
Compression testing may assist in identifying:
-
Cylinder pressure imbalance
-
Valve sealing irregularities
-
Piston ring or cylinder wear indicators
-
Mechanical conditions warranting further evaluation
Results are recorded at the time of testing and interpreted as diagnostic indicators only.
